I have been mocking up my notebook design today.
I tested different thicknesses of greyboard and different ways of scoring the greyboard in order to effectively fold it with a clean fold. I tried using a single scoreing on the 2mm grey board but this didn't fold well at all. I then tried multiple scoring to create a spine an then folding this, the principle was there but one of the scores was too thick so it split and created an open cut. I then tried with some thinner greybaord 0.5mm, this was much better as it could used in a similar way to standard card. I has to score the greyboard first, but then bonefolded and folded it as normal; the creasing from this was minimal, so this is the baord I am going to use.
I then thought about concealing the paper visible on the inside of the cover by folding the edges of the cover over to the inside of the cover. In theory this would work, but in practice the greybaord was too thick an didn't sit flush. So I scrapped this idea.
I was going to use newsprint stock inside the notebook as it is made from a recyclable material, however, I found that my standard print paper was also FSC graded and was a sustainable source so used this instead. I also thought that the newsprint would have been too thin to use for notetaking.
I bound the notebook use thread and a simple Japenese bind.
As, I wanted to allow people to colour their own notebook I thought I could supply colouring materials in the pack. I considered crayons, pens and pencils. I decided on pencils as they are a sustainable source and can be fully used or recycled.
