Final Design Boards

Photographing Products

Francesca and I took out lights and set up our own photography studio today to take pictures of the products I have produced for each of my briefs in order for these to then be put onto my design boards.

RSA: In-Store Presentation

As I am going to propose that my cards designs are sold in the National Trust shops across the country, I had already taken a picture of this when I visited, but I now need to mock my card designs into the image.

I also wanted to propose that the card designs are sold in the National Trust online shop, so I have mocked my design into a screen shot of their website too.

Final Crit

All in all, my crit feedback was very positive. There were a few changes suggested but they will enhance the presentation of my work, so I am going to ensure that I make these changes.

This crit was also a good opportunity to see everyone elses work and boards, so I can use inspiration from these to improve my own work.

RSA:: free e-card

I was going to propose that with everyone of my RSA greetings card, the buyer also recieves one free ecard. However, I wasn't really sure what an e-card entailed and after looking, I have found that are pretty much just short animations. Animation is not an area of design I wish to delve into, so I am going to leave that simply as a design idea!

These are my crit boards to show the proposed digital designs I have been working on so that my peers can see this as well as the physical products I have brought in to the crit.

Lasercutting Greeting Cards

I extended my range of card design and proposed that I could make the design with the Christmas trees work across different designs. Rather than just proposing this, I decided to put it into practice and got myself down to lasercutting to cut this design. I then sold these at the inpress @dock street market event.

RSA:: Notebook printing

I have printed the patterned insert of the notebook onto the Reindeer poo and seeded paper card, ready for my crit tomorrow and submission. I now need to reprint the instruction card and then this product is finished.

RSA:: UPlant Cards

To branch out from the 'UColour' notebooks I have created I have also designed greeting cards which use the same principle. I was considering calling these greetings cards 'UPlant' so that it carries the theme on. The instructions would be printed on seed labels (that are then pegged into the ground so you know that this is where your seeds have been planted). 

So, I tried to use the same layout as I had for the 'UColour' instruction card but made the format slightly more narrow to fit conventional seed labels. However, I found that it was rather difficult to then fit all of the instructions onto this reduced size....

Consequently, I may not taper the bottom edges into a point, as they are traditionally, but instead leave it as a square card so that all the type is evident.

Lasercutting

I have just booked another laser cutting slot for Wednesday 28th at 2.00pm to lasercut the greeting cards that arrived yesterday. These will then be sold at dock street market as part of inpress.

After a little confusion over ebay (ebay telling me my items would not arrive!) the card has arrived and in super speedy time as well! It is exactly the card I wanted, correct size a colour. Excellent. Now I just need to book into lasercutting for next week to cut some more out so I can sell them at our event next weekend.

RSA:: Christmas Card

I have ordered card and am going to laser cut more of these designs to sell at our inpress event next weekend. Although this is already a live brief, I will be making it actually live by selling my card designs to the public.

RSA:: Final ammendments & printing

I wanted to print out a final design for my RSA brief so I could show Phil tomorrow (as discussed in my tutorial) and bring this brief to an end, which will allow me to focus on my final brief more fully.

I needed to print out the new instructions format and insert the coloured paper into the outer card. In printing test pieces first it allowed me to make changes (which although subtle, did have an impact on the design).

I finally printed onto the Reindeer Poo and Christmas Tree paper I had purchased from 'The Exotic Paper Company' as my final design.

Final Greeting Insert

This is the greeting insert which will be sent to print.

RSA:: Snowflake Mockup

 First I scanned in a drawing and live traced it, however, I wasn't keen on the look it gave as it was far too rustic and a little bit messy. So instead I used the pen tool and traced over it digtially myself. I then created two different size of this and made a pattern using the same structure that I had for my tree design.

I then applied this to the card in the same way as the tree design. I am going to propose that a white stock is used for the outer card and a blue paper for the insert.  

Stripping Screens

This morning I have stripped 2 fabric screens, so I am ready to coat and expose them tomorrow. I now need to choose my designs and get them ready to print in the mac suites tomorrow morning so I can then print straight away.

Lasercutting

I had a laser cutting slot booked for 10am this morning, as usual I had a few mishaps.

First I tried it on plain card to see how it would cut so that I would waste my actual card.

From this I was able to tell from this where to position my brown card. I tried to score the middle using a kiss cut, but then this happened....

...it cut straight through.

I pre-cut the brown card to the correct size so removed the bounding box from my design and lasercut it. However, because I had removed the bounding box it cut from the 'x' point and appeared on the wrong side.

I put the bounding box back into the artwork a cut this...

This worked much better and produced the design in the correct place, although it did take a little off the sides. The laser burnt the paper a little and it seemed to look better from the other side, so I tried cutting on the opposite side but it had the same effect. However, I have decided that I quite like this burnt effect and it may look better once the reindeer poo paper is placed beneath it.
