Master pages::

Reader spreads: the pages appear in indesign as they would appear when printed out

A master:: is a template that each page within the document is based upon. Add an element to a master page and it will add it to all pages.

(double click on master to view two master pages)

can be used for non-printable elements columns, guides, rulers, page numbers.

can make changes to object on master page and it will be reflected on all other pages.

all master page items will lock on actual page.

to unlock cmd + shift then click on frame to unlock it and allow you to work with it on page and override the master page item.

or...

Can set up different master pages for different items.

To assign a master page, drag and drop it onto one of the pages.

To start numbering later::

select a page in document (not master)

work in sections:

start of section indicated by triangle above page

to start new section, select page, open 'numbering and section options'

ok.

need to rename first pages as they are also 1, 2 in pages palette.

use roman numerals?

Printing an 8 page booklet::

need to change from 'readers spreads' to printers spreads.

draw out two columns

L |  R

     1
2
     3
4

make way down, then make way back up.

L | R

8  1
2  7
6  3
4  5

these need to print next to each other.

each four pages creates a sheet.

page 1:

8  1
2  7

page 2:

6  3
4  5

each number on a line should add up to one more than the number of pages in the book.

indesign can do this for you, but it's useful to double check.

Print::

check 'print blank pages' box.

centre images to print double sided.

printer settings: 'short edge binding'

for saddle binding you should only have 8 sheets of paper in any one section.

divide overall number of pages and print in ranges.
